de Oude Taveerne

History of de Oude Taveerne

The hotel restaurant was built around 1760 as a private home by a shipowner of the then trade fleet in Durgerdam. The shipping company chamber kept there its meetings. In the 18th century a strong reverse gear of the trade and shipping came and the switch was made to fishery. In 1905 the fisherman fleet of Durgerdam counted 135 vessels and 256 fishermen. The ships of this fleet conduct the character combination RD in the sail and on the ship itself. These characters stood for Ransdorp, the then head village of the municipality Ransdorp. On this municipality were also the villages Schellingwoude, Zunderdorp and Durgerdam.

On 1 January 1922 the municipality Ransdorp "was swallowed" by the large and powerful city of Amsterdam. However, each village has preserved its own character, by the efforts of the rural Councils.

The last of three accommodations, which Durgerdam former had was, "Prins te paard" (Prince on horseback), the current "Oude Taveerne". According to reports the husband of Queen Wilhelmina, Prince Hendrik, was a frequent and gladly seen guest.

The taveerne is now a good place to stop for peace, quiet and rural beauty, lovers of nature, walkers, tourists, yachts and..... those who appreciate a good meal!
